Resources - HIV/AIDS
Although research and teaching have helped make significant advances in HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention, it continues to be a global epidemic. UNAIDS estimates the total number of people living with HIV in 2010 is 33.3 million. Just over half of individuals living with HIV are women and girls. In 2009, an estimated 370 000 children contracted HIV during the perinatal and breastfeeding period. Although treatment has improved, close to 10 million people living with HIV eligible for treatment under the WHO guidelines are still in need. A total of 1.8 million people died from AIDS or AIDS-related infections last year alone.
The Johns Hopkins CCGHE wants to continue its efforts to improve these statistics by providing health care workers with updated and practical HIV/AIDS clinical training suited for resource-limited settings. CCGHE has provided an in-country "train-the-trainer" nursing program for HIV/AIDS care. Since 2005, Johns Hopkins faculty have presented over 1900 educational presentations, training an estimated 8000 providers and technicians in ~20 countries. In HIV, telemedicine training programs include a series of clinical case-based lectures and interactive discussions. (See our India HIV Case Discussion and Ethiopia HIV Case Discussion archives) Grand Rounds from the Johns Hopkins Division of Infectious Diseases are live webcast to centers around the world, and are recorded and archived for viewing on demand.
