Akshay Gupte, PhD, MBBS, MSPH
Akshay Gupte is a junior investigator trained in medicine, clinical research, and global health. His research interests include exploring approaches to host directed adjuvant therapies in tuberculosis (TB) and studying the impact of TB and HIV on lung health of populations.
Dr. Gupte leads an Indo-US collaborative study exploring the impact of TB disease; alone and in combination with smoking, air pollution, HIV and diabetes mellitus; on respiratory impairment and risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in India. He is also a co-investigator on the CTRIUMPH study—a multi-center cohort study aimed at addressing key knowledge gaps in the epidemiology of TB and informing effective preventive and treatment strategies—which is part of the RePORT-India consortium. Additionally, Akshay is a co-investigator on a multi-site study in India, Brazil, and South Africa evaluating molecular signatures of the TB and diabetes interaction.
Akshay is a 2017 Fogarty Fellow and a 2017 recipient of the Arthur M. Dannenberg, Jr., Award. He completed his medical training in India, received his MSPH and PhD degrees from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and has worked as a medical officer in rural and urban settings.
