Summary:

CCGHE and the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) Virology Care Laboratory collaborated to develop several self-paced distance learning laboratory training courses to build in-country capacity to conduct high quality research and perform clinical monitoring. Each 30-minute course was designed for laboratory technicians who process and manage specimens and can be accessed by CCGHE website users at no charge. Courses include: Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cell (PBMC) Cryopreservation (optimal protocols for isolation, counting, freezing, thawing and quality control of PBMCs); CD4 Enumeration (flow cytometric analysis and enumeration of CD4 + T-cells for the monitoring of people infected with HIV); Specimen Management ( laboratory specimen collection, pick-up, transport, processing, analysis, storage and disposal); and Western Blot Laboratory Training (preparing and performing HIV-1 Western Blot procedures, observing the assay, and interpreting & troubleshooting test results). Online pre- and post-tests measured knowledge, and a Certificate of Achievement was offered for each course. More than 300 CD ROMs were distributed globally, more than 195 participants took the online courses, and approximately 200 online Certificates were issued.
