Malaria in Pregnancy

P. falciparum is the primary species responsible for morbidity and mortality in pregnancy.  There are 300-500 million cases/year, mostly in rural tropical areas below 1000m altitude. 30% of preventable cases of low birth weight and 2-3x increased risk of infant anemia as a result of an infected mother.
